Col. John Bolduc, superintendent of NSP, said despite rescue attempts, troopers struggled to get within six miles of the pair.

But Bolduc said dispatchers were able to stay in contact with the two, who were prepared with food and water in their vehicle.

By Saturday evening, the state patrol said crews made it through snow drifts to the pair and rescued them.

Officials say since Monday, troopers have responded to over 1,000 weather-related incidents, including 996 motorist assists.

Bolduc said many of the drivers “thought it was safe to travel” before getting stranded.
