Two suffer serious injuries after race in east Lincoln ends in crash, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two people suffered serious injuries Sunday night in an east Lincoln crash.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded around 8:40 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash near 48th and Randolph streets.

Police think the two vehicles were racing when one tried overtaking the other, causing the crash.

A video on the NOW Local News App shows a vehicle with significant damage that rolled onto its side.

The other vehicle was crushed by a tree.  LFR crews extricated the driver from that vehicle.

At least three nearby homes were also damaged, according to police.

The two drivers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.  Police said both are expected to survive.

An investigation is ongoing, but police said speed was a factor in the crash.

One of the drivers, Joseph Cogley, was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing serious bodily injury.

The other driver was cited on suspicion of willful reckless driving.

A part of 48th Street was shut down as police investigated the crash.
