University of Nebraska campuses rank 77th in patents granted

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — For the fourth year in a row, Nebraska universities are among the highest in the country in patenting the research and discoveries of faculty and staff.

The University of Nebraska system, with universities in Omaha, Kearney and Lincoln, has tied for No. 77, with 38 patents granted in 2020.

NU said patents help Nebraska grads start new businesses, jobs and products that grow and strengthen Nebraska’s economy.

All this is according to a newly released report from the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association, which highlights a novel drug technology developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

That drug technology has led Paul Blum, Ben Pavlik and Kevin Van Cott, all working for UNL, to start Neurocarrus, a startup looking to relieve pain without the risk of opioid addiction.

UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green said NU faculty rank among the best at converting ideas into reality, which shows Nebraska ingenuity and entrepreneurship at work.
