University of Nebraska System earns fifth straight ranking for earning U.S. patents

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The University of Nebraska System has received its best-ever ranking for earning patents among academic institutions worldwide.
Nebraska was listed among 99 other academic institutions in a 2021 report from the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association.
Nebraska rose from No. 77 in 2020 to No. 64 in 2021. The system was tied with Southwest Petroleum University in China in this year’s rankings.
This is the fifth straight year that Nebraska has made the list. The ranking takes into account all patents earned by the system’s four universities.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green believes this ranking is a testament to the state’s ingenuity and entrepreneurship.
He said it also shows the strength of Nebraska’s economy, as these patents help create new business start-ups and new jobs in the state.
