UNL holds celebration of life event for Anna Shavers

Recently passed away at the age of 75

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — On Thursday, UNL held a celebration of life event for long-time law professor Anna Shavers, who recently passed away.

Anna Williams Shavers worked at UNL for more than three decades and served in numerous roles.

Before coming to Nebraska, Shavers practiced law in Minnesota and established the University of Minnesota’s first immigration law clinic.

While at UNL, she was very active on campus in the community, especially with diversity and inclusion, something her daughter said can be attributed to growing up in Arkansas during the civil rights era.

“These early struggles for civil rights helped shape my mother into the person she was. A person committed to justice and devoted to education. These experiences cemented her belief that access to knowledge and a place at the table are keys to progress, and that despite attempts to block progress there was always hope and a better way forward.”

The Dean of UNL’s college of law said Shavers left a lasting impact on generations of students.

Anna Shavers was 75 years-old.
