UNL Police Department launches first citizen police academy

Have you ever wondered how the UNL police department operates to maintain a safe community?

Now’s your chance to find out for yourself!

Police officials with UNL say its all about engaging with the community on campus.

"It’s important to share some of the things we do behind closed doors and how we go about our daily work processes, you may see us out on campus but sometimes you don’t know exactly what we do," Said Hassan Ramzah, Assistant Chief of Police for UNLPD.

The six week academy will be held for three hours once a week.

It is designed to educate members of the campus community about the university police department.

A large variety of topics will be covered including patrol functions, threat detection, and emergency planning and preparedness.

The academy is limited to 12 people.

The deadline to apply is August 31st.

All participants must pass a background check to enter.

"We are hoping that the interest is there and that the campus community looks forward to participating in some of those events and activities," said Ramzah.

You must be a UNL student, staff or faculty member to be eligible for the program.

Applications are available online on the UNL campus website for all registered campus members.
