UNL Women’s Soccer hosts ‘Women in Sports’ day for young athletes

The Women’s Soccer team at UNL hosted a ‘Women in Sports’ day Sunday at their home game against the Rutgers.

“The women’s soccer team took full initiative of this, its something they’ve been planning to do the entire season,” says Mark Springett with the UNL Department of Athletics.

The team invited young athletes to make a tunnel for players as they took the field, and walk out with them as they were introduced to the crowd.

“We were standing on the edge over there and then we runned over there and we high–fived all the players,” says six-yea-old Emry, who hopes to one day be a Husker player herself.

The team wanted to highlight the impact of women in sports and show young athletes that they can achieve their dreams.

“It shows these young athletes just what they have the potential  to do the potential to be and they can grow up and do whatever they want to do with their lives and no one can dictate that for them,” Springett says.

During half time they were invited onto the field to score some goals and show off their skills, and receive autographs from players after the game.

The Huskers finished in a 1-1 tie after double overtime against the Rutgers.
