UNL’s lavender closet to hold benefit drive for students in need

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lavender Closet, a service of UNL’s gender and sexuality center, will be collecting bedding for students in need.

The bedding drive will be held from Aug. 1-11, where the service will be collecting bedding items to distribute to students.

Among the needed items are bed sheets, pillowcases, and blankets. All items must be unopened.

An Amazon wish list has been created to ease the process for donors. All you have to do is purchase the items from the wish list website and they’ll be automatically shipped to the center.

Donations can also be dropped off at the center, which is located in Nebraska Union, room 346.

“The majority of our requests are for standard residence halls, so extra-long twin bedding is needed,” said JD McCown, assistant director of the LGBTQA+ Center.

The bedding drive was initiated after the center and other student services received requests for bedding.

“We only get a few requests a year, but we want to make sure we’re caring for those students. We hope that we can stock up once at the beginning of the school year, and have plenty of bedding for the whole year,” McCown said.

Students in need of bedding will be able to request it from the Lavender Closet, no questions asked.
