Unseasonably warm transition into February
Getting the taste of what feels like spring and a break from winter, we have to remind ourselves that this is likely the “fake” or “fool’s” spring that has come for the Midwest. It’ll be nice while it lasts, but winter probably isn’t quite done just yet.
Because we are still within the last couple days of January, even though this month has maybe felt like a 3-for-1 special. Tuesday will serve up mostly sunny conditions with temperatures warming into the mid 30s by the mid-morning and well into the 40s through the afternoon. Northwest winds will remain light.
Today will be relatively cooler than yesterday, with highs slated to be in the upper 40s. That’s still well above our normal high of 37° for January 30th. It’s also worth mentioning that our morning temperatures have been well above average as well, and I expect that to continue as well.
But as a ridge builds in the upper-air pattern, the “cooler” days do not last long. In fact, we bounce back quite a bit warmer heading into Wednesday and Thursday. Across far southeast Nebraska, some of us may even feel the 60s soon enough. Here in Lincoln, it’ll be close.
And speaking of close, Thursday we’ll get somewhat close to the record for February 1st (64° in 1992).
This is a dry, warm period through the end of this work week. Rain chances will increase late Friday before it’s more likely that we see rain on Saturday. We’ll continue to remain above normal into next week.
