Woman killed in three vehicle crash near Greenwood

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 42-year-old Greenwood woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash late Wednesday night.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says a reckless driver is to blame for the deadly crash at Highway 6 and Greenwood Drive.

We’re told they were speeding in a white 2007 Hummer, and going into oncoming lanes, when the vehicle slammed into a red 2006 Toyota Scion.

The Scion then rolled into a ditch, according to authorities, while the Hummer swerved into a grey 2019 Ford Fusion head-on.

Officials have identified the driver of the Fusion as 42-year-old Tammy Callaway.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Channel 8 spoke with the couple who heard the crash and called 911.

The town has a motto saying that Greenwood is a small town but they have a big heart.

One neighbor who lives right in front of the crash site said he ran towards those in need of his help, while his wife called 911 making sure that help was on the way.

“Well we heard a big boom and it sounded like a wreck.  I come out here and saw three cars. One tipped over, one in the ditch and one on its top,” the resident said.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the Hummer, identified as Cheyanne Baker of Lincoln was driving recklessly and is to blame for the deadly crash.

One of the residents used his hands to try and put out a small fire that just started, then ran to check on Callaway.

“Well, I held her hand for a little bit. I asked her if she was alright and I thought I felt her squeeze my hand. I went and got the garden hose to make sure the fire was out because I saw the steam coming out of the other van, the Hummer,” the resident said.

The couple say they have lived in the home for around 30 years and have never seen a crash in front of their home.

“There was debris everywhere, it was scattered,” said the resident.

All of the first responders used teamwork, calling in multiple agencies to assist.

Residents said the speed limit used to be 45 MPH where the crash happened, but has since been changed to 65 MPH.

“I just asked the officers here on the scene if they knew why the sign was moved and they said that would be a question for the Department of Roads. Why would the Department of Roads do that? I don’t know if you can see the traffic going by here right now but they are flying by this house. Ridiculous, it’s dangerous,” said a concerned community member.”

Authorities also say the driver of the Hummer was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover.

The two occupants of the Scion had minor injuries.

No word yet on any possible charges related to this deadly wreck.
