Vehicle that officer shot after north Lincoln traffic stop found unoccupied, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Investigators found a vehicle that an officer shot at Sunday after a north Lincoln traffic stop.

A Hyundai Azera was found unoccupied near Ninth and Manatt streets around 10:15 p.m.  The driver has not been found.

On Monday, acting Police Chief Michon Morrow provided more details on the shooting.

Around 9:40 a.m. Sunday, an officer pulled over the Hyundai near 19th and Knox streets.

The driver fled into the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.

The officer pulled in behind the Hyundai, but the driver reversed and drove farther into the parking lot, according to Morrow.

Eventually, the Hyundai hit a dead end.

The driver reversed again, hitting a retaining wall and a vehicle.

Morrow said the Hyundai then drove toward the officer, who shot the vehicle twice, striking the hood.

The driver, who police think was not injured, drove over landscaping rocks and fled.

It’s unknown why the vehicle, which had an in-transit sticker, was pulled over.

Morrow said that officers have identified a possible suspect and that an investigation is ongoing.

The officer who shot at the car was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave.
