Very dry thus far into September, looks to change next week
Only 12 years on record dating back to 1887 have started out with no precipitation through September 12th in Lincoln.
This is our driest start to the month of September since 2002.
With only subtle differences in the next few days, temperatures will remain on the warmer side of average with winds picking up, especially out west.
We will see slightly cooler temperatures especially Saturday as the dry weather also continues.
Gusty winds Thursday afternoon and evening will be in the 35-50 mph range throughout central and western Nebraska today. Again, dry vegetation out there under these conditions could spark a fire if not careful, and it would spread quickly.
In knowing this, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday afternoon and evening. Nebraska is one of eight states nearby under a Red Flag Warning for critical fire danger expected today.
Thursday and Friday will have a similar feel. While humidity remains on the low side, southerly winds will still be in the picture. Temperatures remain above average, hovering in the upper 80s around 90°.
Temperatures dip a little more with added cloud cover and lighter winds on Saturday. It’ll be a warmer evening for another Husker home game at Memorial Stadium.
Indications point toward several chances at rain throughout next week. We’ve seen no measurable precipitation this entire month, so we’ll look forward to that!
