Victim warns others after thieves target Waverly neighborhood
WAVERLY, Neb. (KLKN) – Thieves hit a Waverly neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
Michelle Wesson said she found her car ransacked as she was leaving for work.
“Right then, I knew something was off, and somebody had definitely broken into my car,” she said.
A set of keys and $200 worth of jewelry were missing, so she made a police report.
Wesson lives in the area of 141st and Lancashire streets, near the city park and post office.
She’s not the only one who was targeted in the neighborhood.
“Somebody out there is just trying to go through the town and just prey on people,” Wesson said.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said that only a few blocks away, another victim had their pickup truck stolen from their driveway.
It was found undamaged in Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon.
A neighbor captured Ring camera footage of two people checking whether their car doors were unlocked around 2:45 a.m.
Wesson said this situation makes her feel a little less safe.
“I certainly didn’t expect this,” she said. “We’ve lived here about a year, and we love this town.”
Even though the jewelry didn’t hold sentimental value, she said it still feels violating.
“It’s just the fact of, you know, having somebody go through your stuff,” Wesson said.
The sheriff’s office said the thieves targeted vehicles that were left unlocked.
Wesson said she usually locks her car doors, but now she’ll be even more sure to double-check.
