Walkouts led by dozens of students staged at several Lincoln schools

LINCOLN Neb. (KLKN) — Dozens of students from many schools in Lincoln took part in class walkout Wednesday as part of a protest.
One of these demonstrations included a crowd of teenagers at Culler Middle School holding signs outside of the building. A group of students from Lincoln High School also marched to the Nebraska State Capitol Building to make their voices heard.
The walkouts were part of an effort to speak out against recent ICE activity around the country, particularly in Minnesota. The first of these protests began on Wednesday, February 4.
When these demonstrations first began, Lincoln Public Schools said in a statement that they do not authorize or organize any of the events. Their statement reads in part,
“Our schools are focused on providing a normal learning environment for all students. While they are not sponsored by our school nor the school district, we cannot stop a student from exercising their first amendment right and walking out as long as they are not disruptive to others. “
Lincoln Public Schools officials add they’ll keep with their long-established protocols with future student-led walkouts.
