Wanted man shot by officer at north Lincoln hotel is facing additional charges

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man who was shot by an officer at a north Lincoln hotel last week is facing additional charges.

The citations were issued after investigators searched 35-year-old Garrett Hanika’s Jeep, police said Friday.

He was additionally cited on suspicion of five more charges, including felony theft and possession of a stolen firearm.

On Nov. 21, Officer Nicholas Vest approached Hanika — who was wanted on a federal warrant out of Council Bluffs, Iowa — at the Microtel near 25th and Fairfield streets.

Hanika, who was in a Jeep, reversed and crashed into Vest’s cruiser.

Police said Hanika also tried to run over Vest, who fired two shots, striking him.

A 39-year-old woman got out of the Jeep, and Hanika ran her over, trapping her underneath, according to police.

Hanika was treated for two gunshot wounds, one to the head and another to a lower extremity.

Once medically cleared, he was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault on an officer.

A Lancaster County judge set Hanika’s bond at $250,000.  He must pay $25,000 to be released from jail.
