Warm today before temperatures tumble into February 1/31/2022
The last day of January is off to a mild start with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Wind chill values are in the teens for some, so grab the coats for the morning but ditch them by the afternoon. Highs will soar into the low 60s today with thin partly cloudy skies and increasing wind speeds. Southerly winds will turn gusty this afternoon and evening, with wind gusts above 25 mph possible. These strong winds, warm temperatures and dry air across the state are raising the concern for fire weather today. A Fire Weather Warning/Red Flag Warning has been issued as a result and will be in effect from 11 AM to 6 PM today. Avoid burning in central Nebraska and stay away from fire pits even though the weather is nice today. An overnight cold front will drop temperatures overnight and for the rest of the week. Highs tumbled into the 40s tomorrow and 20s for the rest of the week. This temperature drop will also be accompanied by some snow over parts of Nebraska on Wednesday. The best chance for a dusting of snow will be south of I-80 and the potential for an inch of snow increases the further to the south you go. This is NOT looking like a major snow event for us, but it will impact your travel plans on Wednesday if you plan on heading south.
