Extreme Heat:
Dangerous heat is on the way for much of Nebraska starting on Sunday:
- The National Weather Service has issued an EXTREME HEAT WARNING from noon Sunday, July 27, until 8 p.m. CDT Monday, July 28.
- A HEAT ADVISORY is also in place for central Nebraska from noon to 8 p.m. CDT on both Sunday and Monday. Heat index values are expected to be well into the triple digits on both days.
The National Weather Service Heat Risk product places areas of Nebraska under a MAJOR HEAT RISK (Level 4 out of 5) for portions of Nebraska on both Sunday and Monday. Health impacts from the heat will be possible, particularly for those in sensitive groups.
It will be important to monitor yourself and those around you for symptoms of heat-related illnesses. The above lists the symptoms for both heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as well as steps to take if either you or someone around you is experiencing symptoms.
Forecast:
Temperatures will return to near-average today in the Capital City with highs expected to reach the lower 90s this afternoon. Dew points will remain in the lower and middle 70s, which will continue the sticky feeling in the air we have seen the past few days.
Showers and thunderstorms will be possible tonight for portions of western and central Nebraska. Any severe threat with these storms is expected to be minimal at this time, with small hail and strong winds a possibility. Storms are expected to fizzle out over central Nebraska Saturday night.
Forecast lows tonight will be in the lower 70s for much of southeastern Nebraska. Dew points in the 70s will continue tonight, which will give us another chance to see some areas of patchy fog tomorrow morning.
Our low temperature in the Capital City tonight will drop to 73 degrees with mostly clear skies and a southerly breeze.
Temperatures really begin to heat up on Sunday, with southeast Nebraska seeing highs in the middle to upper 90s. We get another day of mostly sunny skies and a stronger breeze from the south.
Lincoln will see the upper 90s on Sunday as hot and humid conditions continue to blanket the region. Mostly sunny skies with a southerly wind between 5 and 10 miles per hour, gusting to 20.
Looking at the extended forecast, this latest batch of higher temperatures continues until Tuesday night, before a cold front looks to cool us off during the middle part of next week. Storm chances will be possible over the days following this cool down, and we will enter August with high temperatures well below average.
