WATCH: Porch pirate steals Lincoln man’s heavy Christmas present for daughter

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln man was forced to reorder a Christmas gift for his daughter after it was stolen off of his porch.

Kenny Gilpin ordered a vanity for his daughter as a Christmas gift but on Thursday, he watched the theft unfold on his Ring doorbell camera.

“They come back around the corner out of camera view and grab it, and then run off into the backyard,” said Gilpin.

It’s a common occurrence this time of year.

Seven items have been reported stolen off of porches in Lincoln in the last week, according to police data.

Gilpin said the theft was a total surprise, and it was especially painful to watch a gift be taken.

“I was very surprised that it was stolen so quickly,” said Gilpin. “It really kind of hurt my feelings. To buy such a gift for my daughter, just seeing that she would be excited for it, and then for all of that to be taken away immediately by someone’s crude actions, that was pretty hurtful.”

He has two cameras, but they weren’t enough to deter the thief, who was able to run away with the nearly 300-pound box.

“I guess cameras are good to a certain extent, you know, but they don’t cover all bases,” he said.

Gilpin also tried to protect the package with delivery instructions.

“There was instructions that they did not follow,” he said. “The instructions were to deliver it to the garage and use the passcode that I gave them.”

He said moving forward, he will make sure to add delivery insurance and require a signature for delivery.

Gilpin has ordered a new vanity for his daughter and said he spent $500 between both orders.
