Water levels rise overnight at Dead Man’s Run and Salt Creek in Lincoln

Many areas around Lincoln have received upwards of six inches of rainfall this past week.

It’s causing some concern for flooding potential.

A Lincoln woman, Sande Stalnaker, awoke Tuesday morning to find Dead Man’s Run, near Cotner and Vine streets, nearly full of water.

Stalnaker says her dogs woke up her up at 5 am to be let outside, and that’s when she saw how full the waterway was.

“I opened the door to let them out, and the roar from Dead Man’s Run scared me. Then I said to myself, I need to take some video of this, or nobody is going to believe me,” said Stalnaker.

Stalnaker says the noise of the moving water was so loud, it scared her two dogs, who bolted back inside.

The water levels have receded a bit since the early hours of Tuesday morning, but it’s still running very high.

“It kind of scared me because I hadn’t seen it that full before,” said Stalnaker.

Stalnaker has lived near Dead Man’s Run at Chateau Gardens for the last two and a half years.

She’s worried about the people who live here, if an emergency did take place.

“These are all elderly people that live in this building. There are 90 apartments here, and it takes us a while to get to a different place,” said Stalnaker.

Dead Man’s Run isn’t the only waterway running high right now in Lincoln.

Salt Creek is also nearly full with water.

Lots of debris can be seen moving along with the current.

Stalnaker says she will act as the watchdog moving forward, if she feels there is an emergency, she says she will be ready to act.

“If the level gets up to where there is an emergency, I will be letting the people in this building know that we need to go up to the second or third floor to be safe,” said Stalnaker.

City and county officials say they are monitoring the water levels every hour.

They’re still not sure how high it’s going to get.
