Waverly City Council delays decision on speed limit near school

The speed on Amberly Road in Waverly has been a hot topic for parents whose kids go to Hamlow Elementary.

On Monday, the Waverly City Council was set to vote on a resolution that would lower the speed limit from 40 miles per hour to 35.

But they decided to delay that vote until October.

"Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t happen quite as quickly as some would like and i understand that," said Councilman John Hesterman.  "But we do have certain steps and certain hoops we have to take before we can just arbitrarily change things in traffic."

One of those steps is bringing in construction and engineering firm Schemmer Associates to do a study on all the crosswalks on Amberly Road.

The firm recommended the council wait until after they finish their study before making any decision on changing the speed limit there.

"It’s important that we understand what’s happening there," said Matt Shimerdla of Schemmer Associates.  "And I don’t think we want to make rash decisions…we want to make sure we are following a policy and a way to do this.  And that includes making sure we have all that data ahead of time."

That’s not to say the city hasn’t taken any steps yet.

They said they’ve recently installed flashing lights on pedestrian crossing signs and crossing guards are a regular thing.  The school is also offering a cross–town busing service for those who live south of Amberly Road.
