‘We don’t need any grinches’: Salvation Army kettle stolen from Lincoln U-Stop

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – For many, the Salvation Army red kettle at stores is a familiar sign of generosity.

But last week, one of those kettles — along with the donations collected inside — was stolen from the U-Stop at Fletcher Avenue off Highway 34.

“People donate to the red kettle because they believe the Salvation Army is going to use that donation to help their neighbors in need,” Capt. Kelsie Moreno said. “We want to make sure that we can help anybody all year long, and it’s hard to do when people walk off with the red kettle.”

Moreno said each donation made is crucial for paying for after-school programs, food and Christmas gifts for those who need them most.

The theft comes during a busy time for the Salvation Army, as the demand for its service increases during the holidays.

But it also needs that money to get through the rest of the year.

“It’s always disappointing when something like this happens,” Moreno said. “You know the public gives from the kindness of their heart. And when somebody takes those donations meant for people in need, it’s just devastating.”

The organization urges people to keep supporting its efforts, either through donations at other kettles or online.

Moreno said the spirit of giving remains alive in the community.

She said when the Salvation Army picked up the replacement kettle Wednesday morning, it was filled to the brim.

“The $650,000 that we raise at Christmas time, literally it feeds people all year long,” Moreno said. “It helps people keep their lights on, and we don’t need any grinches walking off with those donations.”

Despite the setback, the Salvation Army remains determined to continue its mission.

And the organization said if you need help, just ask

Lincoln is a giving community, she said, “so people do not need to steal or be a grinch in order to get their needs met.”
