“We remember what they gave us”: Lincoln honors fallen heroes on Memorial Day
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Hundreds gathered at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln on Memorial Day to remember America’s fallen heroes.
The ceremony started with a parade honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Dozens of Lincoln veterans came to the cemetery to honor those who fell in battle.
“I’m a wounded combat veteran myself; my two best buddies were killed in combat,” said Robert Tobin. “So, this is very meaningful to me.”
One Vietnam Veteran brought a special relic with him.
“This is a field cross from when a soldier was killed,” Gailen Young said. “I picked up his rifle and his boots and his helmet and put it up as a monument to him.”
A local Girl Scout troop placed flowers on each grave to honor those who are gone and their families.
Col. Thaddeus Fineran, Chief of Staff with the Nebraska Air National Guard, thanked military families who also make the sacrifice, and said it’s a time to remember those who are no longer with us.
“We remember what they gave us, and we honor them today,” Fineran said.
