Weather “wrapped”: Lincoln’s 2024 year in review, record severe weather season

4 26 24 Tornado Lincoln Neb 22

Michael Wilson

We’re closing the book on a crazy year for weather in Nebraska, especially our severe weather season.

Severe weather was responsible for producing Lincoln’s strongest wind gust (83 mph) and damaging winds across the area on July 31st.

Year In Review

From a tornado outbreak to flooding, snow squalls to blizzards, there were some wild weather facts to come out of 2024.

Receiving well over four inches of rain at the beginning of July led to flooding in Lincoln.

The National Weather Service of Omaha is responsible for issuing warnings for eastern Nebraska, and they had a record year. They issued the most tornado warnings of any year, the second most across the country of any other office in 2024.

Most of those warnings came from one day, the Arbor Day outbreak on April 26th.

Record Severe Season

The office also issued the most severe thunderstorm warnings of any year before.

For Nebraska as a whole, we had the most snow squall warnings and dense fog advisories of any year as well. The National Weather Service of Omaha issued their first two snow squall warnings ever.

Speaking on winter weather, it’s been a very slow start to seeing any snow. We still are adding days to the longest streak of going without measurable snow: 349 days and counting. Very weird.

Snowless Streak

And we’ve never waited this long for our first snow after summer and fall. When we finally do see a tenth of an inch or more soon, it’ll be the latest first measurable snow ever. Odd.
