‘We’re all one’: Lincoln mom turns her struggles into hope for others

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nora Martinez is a single mother of three who has struggled with food insecurity in the past.

“I can’t think of something more terrifying than not knowing what you’re going to do to feed your kids when you’re already doing so much to make it happen,” said Martinez.

Now that she’s overcome those struggles, she’ll be opening the Black Sheep Fusion Food Trailer this Saturday, where she will be giving out meals to those in need on a pay-as-you-can basis.

Martinez first started the trailer as a brick-and-mortar in 2024, but closed it several months later due to the birth of her son.

In light of the pause in SNAP benefits, she is using her launch to give back to those struggling with food insecurity, as she did not so long ago.

“Everybody at some point feels like they didn’t have someone that understands them or was there for them, and with Black Sheep, we like to think, we’re all one, we’re here together. We’re stuck here,” said Martinez.

She prioritizes that mentality when it comes to her “melting pot” menu, where she fuses many different flavor profiles.

The menu items will be released on Saturday, and whatever customers choose to pay for them will help her maintain a food pantry housed on the trailer.

Martinez is asking for items such as flour, sugar and potatoes, but is also accepting monetary donations or even volunteer time.

Her launch will take place in the parking lot of The Hub, “a central access point for young adults.”

The organization that aids struggling youth donated the space to her, which already has a Free Little Pantry located right next to it.

Lori Dillow accesses the pantry from time to time because she experiences food insecurity herself.

She says she is grateful to learn about what Martinez is doing.

“It’s not just about being hungry. There’s a lot of other things that come along with that, you know, emotionally,” said Dillow.
