Western Nebraska Storm Chances, Mild Heading Towards July 4th
Severe Weather Update:
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH EXPANDED
The Severe T-storm Watch now includes Keya Paha, Brown, and Rock counties and is in place until midnight, July 2, 2025. Storms will move from northwest to southeast across western Nebraska with storms fading after midnight. Hail and damaging wind will be the main concern.
The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight (Level 2 out of 5) Risk for portions of the panhandle for the potential for severe storms throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening. Large hail will be the initial threat with any storms that get going, before the threat for damaging winds becomes more prominent as storms move east.
The latest runs of Stormcast show a line of storms spanning from southwest to central Nebraska this evening. These storms will largely be driven by daytime heating, which will cause the potential of severe weather to decrease quickly after sunset. That being said, there will still be a chance for a few isolated storms that may be able to survive into the overnight.
Forecast:
Forecast low temperatures this evening will sit right around average in the middle 60s with a light breeze out of the south.
High temperatures return to the 90s on Wednesday. We will see mostly sunny skies and a stronger wind out of the southwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour.
The morning commute starts in the upper 60s in the Capital City before we reach the 80s around the lunch hour. The high temperature for Lincoln will be just a couple of degrees above average in the lower 90s.
Heading into Independence Day, expect hot temperatures to tag along to any barbeques or fireworks shows. Storm chances are in the forecast starting on July 4th and heading through the weekend. Long-range models show increasing chances for rain, particularly in the eastern portions of Nebraska, but a more exact location and timing of precipitation should enter the forecast soon.
We will stay in the 90s through most of the holiday weekend before cooling off just slightly with early week storm chances. A small chance for a shower will be possible through next Thursday, with high temperatures near average for the first half of July.
