What’s next after a heated week at the Nebraska Legislature
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — After a heated week with multiple demonstrations at the Capitol, Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh says she will be even more insistent with the filibuster efforts.
“What we saw a couple of days last week, where we saw some bills move at a more normal pace, that is done,” she said.
This comes after the advancement of LB 574, the Let Them Grow Act, which would ban puberty blockers, hormone therapies and gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

Another bill that advanced this week was the Nebraska Heartbeat Act, which would ban abortion after cardiac activity is detected.
These were two major wins for conservatives.
“I think we have the makings of an historic session,” Sen. Tom Briese said. “We have made some tremendous steps in furthering the interests of everyday Nebraskans.”
As these bills advance, there are concerns that some say have not been addressed.
Sen. Carol Blood said if the bills are approved, it could bring legal consequences for the state.
“They continue to now, again, to bring back bad legislation,” Blood said. “And what’s going to happen is the state would be involved with lawsuits.”
Blood said this is because senators are trying to rush many of these controversial bills.
Sen. Kathleen Kauth, the sponsor of the Let Them Grow Act, said she is open to discussing changes to the bill.
“Being able to sit down and talk with some people and make a few more tweaks to the bill to make it more effective and better, I’m more than willing to do,” she said.
