Winter Storm Conditions Starting Friday Night

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES are in place starting Friday afternoon-Saturday. Expect icy roads along I-80 overnight Friday and Saturday morning. Snow accumulations between 1-3″.  Blowing snow will make for blizzard like conditions across NE Nebraska Saturday morning and then all of eastern Nebraska Saturday afternoon. More snow likely further into Iowa, where Winter Storm Warnings are in place. This starts Friday morning and goes through Saturday.

Freezing rain timing: 3pm Friday-10am Saturday along I-80.

Peak winter storm conditions: 2am Saturday-1pm Saturday.

NOTE: Wet, heavy snow piles up quickly, but could lessen snow chances after rain is gone. Dry, light snow blows around and tends to accumulate gradually over time.
When rain changes to snow, that transition period is often the best window for quick snowfall accumulation, depending on surface temperatures and melting rate.

The highest snowfall totals will be in northeast Nebraska and into Iowa. The rest of eastern Nebraska will be on the southern/western edge of this storm system so smaller amounts are likely. Also, rain may happen first in SW and SE Nebraska, so that will take away some of the snow, and dry air on the back end of this storm will slow the snowfall potential, too. Lincoln is on the fringe of the 1-3″ line. All depends on when and how long the rain will occur Saturday morning.

Friday evening through the weekend, freezing rain/snow mix likely for SW and along I-80 Monday, another small chance for snow south ofI-80. Won’t amount to much. December starts cold with highs in the 30s. The heaters will be glad to be back to keep us warm!
