Wintry mix chance, followed by bitter cold
After a few days in the 50s, winter is coming back in full force. Wednesday will be our transition day to a colder pattern, bringing some wintry precipitation to the state as this happens.
Temperatures will hold steady in the upper-20s to low-30s in Lincoln for much of the morning, but will steadily fall by mid and late afternoon. It will also be windy, so afternoon wind chills will likely remain in the teens.
WEDNESDAY WINTRY WEATHER
Snow looks likely for much of Wednesday in northern Nebraska, and that’s about where it remains for most of the daytime hours. Meanwhile, a dry slot should limit precipitation in southern Nebraska.
Most versions of Stormcast do not show much along and south of I-80. However, there may be just enough moisture to produce a very light wintry mix in southern Nebraska through the day. This would likely be comprised of freezing drizzle, perhaps mixing in with a few flakes.
We do not expect much meaningful precipitation in southern Nebraska. However, if you have clouds, you may come across the light mix. Heading into Wednesday night, we expect a few snow showers to traverse the state. That’s where Lincoln would have the best chance of seeing any snow – probably closer to midnight.
Snow totals should be light for most of southern Nebraska. An inch or two can’t be ruled out with any show showers on Wednesday night. A lot more snow will accumulate in northern sections of the state.
For areas able to see freezing drizzle/rain, ice accumulations also should be light. Nevertheless, light ice accrual is still enough to cause slick spots on the roads, especially on untreated surfaces.
DANGEROUSLY COLD WEATHER
After snow showers pass through late Wednesday, skies will begin to clear and temperatures will plummet. Wind chill values may be below zero for most of Thursday in Lincoln.
Wind chills will be dangerously cold through the end of the workweek, so make sure to dress accordingly if you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time.
