Woman arrested for kidnapping 2 year old

According to Lincoln Police, a 54-year-old woman kidnapped a 2-year-old child on Saturday, July 21. 

The toddler was sitting on the ground outside his family’s hotel room at the Deluxe Inn at 52nd and Cornhusker Highway as they were getting ready to leave the motel, police said. His mom, grandfather and siblings were nearby. 

That’s when the woman, Sherry Gilbert, came out of her own room, grabbed the child and shut her door," police said. 

The mom and grandfather began knocking on the door and yelling for Gilbert to open her door. 

Gilbert told them she thought the boy was her own son, Officer Angela Sands with police department said. 

The grandfather eventually kicked down the door, grabbed the toddler and returned him to his mother. 

Police said he wasn’t hurt. 

Gilbert was arrested for kidnapping and is still in custody.
