Lincoln police say a woman discovered a hidden camera in her apartment bathroom last week, and found out it was a friend who installed it.

Imagine: you’re getting ready to hop in the shower at home, and notice a towel hook you don’t remember hanging. That’s similar to what happened to a 21-year-old woman last week. Police say she reported the discovery Thursday morning.

The hidden camera was disguised as a white towel hook, and was placed on the back of her bathroom door. Luckily, the woman found it before any inappropriate video was captured.

“In this case it hadn’t filmed anything that would be embarrassing or that we could identify an actual victim,” Lincoln Police Detective John Donahue said.

Donahue took a look at the camera, which is battery-powered and has motion sensor capabilities. A small card on the back is where the footage is stored, he said.

“It’s fairly typical, the way miniaturization is now, they can build a camera into almost any item or device,” Donahue said.

That includes alarm clocks, smoke detectors and outlets. Police say this particular hook camera is less than $20.

“It may not be that sturdy or work for that long but it’s still dangerous,” Donahue said.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told police she knows who did it. She thinks it was a friend who came over to use her apartment’s pool on Monday. She says she wants action to be taken, but was told that because no video of her was captured on the device, no charges can be made.

The investigation is ongoing.
