LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — One Girl Scouts troop leader wants every local girl to feel accepted and not let income hold back young local girls from joining.

“Outreach helps girls with financial barriers have access to everything that a traditional Girl Scout would do,” said Nichole Vesely. “There’s no cost associated with coming to the community troop.”

She adds if families can’t afford field trips or dues. It can make one feel left out, but in this troop, no girl will be left behind as they do all activities and trips together.

“So if you are a girl in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, you can come here one Sunday a month,” said Vesely. “Learn something new, have fun with your friends, learn what you’re good at, learn what you’re not good at because that’s important too.”

She points out in the pandemic, kids missed that face-to-face interaction and in their monthly meetings, the girls get to be involved.

A mother says it’s worth it to see her daughters light up.

“Oh, my daughters are so alive when they come, they’re bright-eyed you know and they’re excited and that’s what life is about and growing together,” said Nature Johnson.

Her daughter says she has gained three friends and likes making new things.

“It’s a fun place to go because at my house there is really nothing to do. Coming here because there’s stuff to do fun,” said Nature’s daughter, also named Nature.
