York football raising the bar ahead of this season
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – York High School football know a thing or two about winning, many of the seniors on this years team grew up watching the Dukes when they were at their best.
The team earned a state title in 2017 and had plenty of winning seasons before that.
Senior Carter Culotta says the idea of being a varsity player for the Dukes is just special.
“We start, as you know, fourth, fifth sixth graders in peewee football and now we’re the top dogs,” Culotta said. “We used to look up to these guys and now we’re the guys being looked up to.”
This year, the team has the depth and the passion to try and get back to that level despite a fairly successful season last year where they finished 5-5.
The Dukes were called the ‘cardiac kids’ by some people in the town because of how many games they won by pulling it out at the end.
Head Coach Glen Snodgrass enters his 12th season with York and says he feels the experience of this team will make a difference.
“I’m feeling really good about our scheme and just those kids knowing our scheme because like I said, they’ve been running it for years,” Snodgrass said.
Snodgrass says the theme of this season is raising the bar and the seniors are taking the idea of winning very personally.
“I think they want a little bit more,” Snodgrass said. “The senior group really wants to kind of leave a legacy because it is a good senior group that has played a lot of football.”
One of those seniors is his son, Dylan Snodgrass who plays tight end and outside linebacker.
He says the mindset throughout the summer and now through week one of pre season works feels different.
“It’s just quiet, everybody’s just doing their job and doing it at an elite level, too,” he said. “And I felt that a couple times this year, it’s just something is clicking this year.”
