‘Your Wallet’: You might find utility in this Black Hills Energy price option

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The summer heat is still hanging around Nebraska, so you probably aren’t thinking too much about your upcoming gas bill.

But Black Hills Energy has a program to give you peace of mind when the temperature drops.

Customers can enroll in the Open Annual Price Option Program to secure a fixed gas rate instead of the traditional variable rate.

“Just like the gas that you put in your car, the price of natural gas rises and falls throughout the year, based on what’s happening with the economy and a variety of factors.” Black Hills spokeswoman Brandy Johnson said. “So, to provide some certainty to customers, they can sign up for the annual price option, knowing that the price for the actual gas is going to be the same.”

That means no matter how much market prices fluctuate, your price stays the same through Oct. 31, 2024.

Black Hills’ price per therm is about 64 cents, which is about 23 cents cheaper than it was last year.

That can give you peace of mind when budgeting your utility bills, if you feel that’s a good price.

It is important to remember that while your set price could be lower than market price, it could also be higher.

“We just don’t know what that price intersection is going to be with certainty,” Johnson said. “But what we can say is, the annual price option is a certain price. So, no matter what happens on the supply and demand side, your price is going to be the same.”
The opportunity is limited, as enrollment runs until Oct. 9, or until 14,000 customers have joined.
“We have a lot of customers that want to sign up and we only have a limited amount,” Johnson said.
Customers who do not want to participate do not have to do anything to opt out; they will be billed using the traditional rate.
