16-year-old fled traffic stop, crashed into tree in Grand Island, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 16-year-old was ticketed Wednesday after he drove away from an officer and crashed into a tree in Grand Island, police say.

Around 12:50 a.m., an officer tried pulling over an SUV after the driver violated a traffic light at Old Lincoln Highway and Blaine Street.

But the driver – later identified as a 16-year-old boy – sped off.  Police said the teen left the road and struck a fire hydrant and a tree.

Once again, the boy drove off.  Officers later found the vehicle at a home, where they spoke with the boy’s parents.

The boy was cited on suspicion of not having a driver’s license, flight to avoid arrest, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and disobeying a traffic signal.
