95 get sick, including one in Nebraska, from salmonella-contaminated eggs

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A salmonella outbreak linked to eggs has sickened people in several states, including Nebraska, officials say.

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that it was investigating the outbreak.

There have been 95 salmonella cases, including 18 hospitalizations, across 14 states.

California is the hardest-hit state, with 73 cases, according to the CDC. Nebraska has one case.

The outbreak came from large brown cage-free eggs distributed by Country Eggs.

They were sold at retailers under the brand names Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho and Nijiya Markets.

The distributor recalled the eggs on Wednesday.

If you have any of the recalled eggs, you should throw them away or bring them back to where you bought them.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and can begin anywhere from six hours to six days after exposure, officials said.

Most people recover without treatment within a week, according to the CDC.

If you have severe symptoms, including a fever higher than 102 degrees or bloody diarrhea, you should call your doctor.
