Earthquake rumbles across parts of southeast Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 4.1 magnitude earthquake shook southeast Nebraska on Sunday afternoon.
The quake was centered about 3 miles east of Cowles, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the USGS, the earthquake was reported just before 1 p.m. with a depth of around 2 miles.
Officials said the quake traveled at least 86 miles.
Channel 8 received calls and emails from people across southeast Nebraska who felt the rumble.
“I thought it was definitely interesting,” said Sophie Anderson. “Especially after the sinkhole in Omaha, I was like ‘wow a sinkhole, now an earthquake.’ I thought all we had to worry about was tornadoes.”
One woman who wished to remain anonymous, described her experience when everything in her home suddenly started shaking.
“I realized that my plants were moving, and my chair was shaking and I could see decorations moving in my living room,” she said. “So I realized it wasn’t just truck traffic. Did I really just feel an earthquake? That seems really weird.”
A student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said she was studying for her test, when the building started swaying.
“I thought it was really weird,” said Ayla Anderson. “But I’m kind of excited to tell people I was in an earthquake. I was kind of hyped while going to my exam.”
