"We will take a walking tour and I will be happy to show you the inside of the rink,” Glen Danischewiski, President of Rink Management Services, said.
The tour started with catching a first glimpse of a nearly seven year , $11 million project in the making, the John Breslow Ice Hockey Center. It’s located north of the arena near Haymarket Park.
The rink is a single sized national hockey league sheet spanning 17,000 square feet of ice on Lincoln’s only year round rink open to the public.
The ice is for more than hockey and figure skating.
"We are catering to everyone in the community," Danischewiski said.
Drawings on the ice are specialized for UNL’s curling team and sled hockey boxes make the ice accessible to anyone.
"This is an axis for anybody that is handicap to get on the ice," Danischewiski said.
Surrounding the rink you will find bleachers that seat 700, and five locker rooms, four are suitable to fit 25 adult hockey players comfortably.
"Next we will be passing by our three party rooms,” Danischewiski said.
Public skating is essential for the center as the demand for ice grows. It will be open for skating, party reservations, UNL campus recreation events, and league hockey games.
It’s that demand that officials say could be a big economic boost, keeping skaters in Lincoln, or even bringing more here.
"There are hundreds of people that go to Omaha and other places to play hockey, take lessons and utilize ice," Danischewiski said.
Other amenities include two zambonis, LED lighting systems, and temperature settings that keep the arena comfortable and the ice frozen.
The hockey center opens Tuesday at noon for a public session, followed by a pick up hockey match.
