For Jamie Ligon Friday was set to be a normal day of work at Accent Hair Salon off 56th and Holdrege. It was a slow day and her client didn’t show up. The other stylist in the salon was doing 88 year old Arlene Sorensen’s hair. Sorensen was in the drying chair when Jamie noticed her mouth was drooping.
"We were both like ehh, something’s not right. Then before we could even get to the phone she was not breathing," Jamie Ligon, who saved Arlene’s life, said.
The stylist quickly jumped to action calling 911.The dispatcher instructed her to start CPR. That’s when Jamie says it all clicked. She called on training she’s learned nearly 10 years ago and started chest compressions.
"I was panicking and praying and shaking and when she was moving and saying ow during the compressions, it was so exciting," Ligon said.
When rescue crews got there they took over, and told Jamie if she wouldn’t have known CPR Arlene wouldn’t have made it.
"I have never been so excited to see emergency personnel in my life!" Ligon said.
Arlene’s son says she’s recovering well and she’ll be back to hair appointments soon. As for Jamie?
"Everyone keeps saying I’m the hero and I just don’t feel like a hero. I just hope anyone would help if they had to and not be scared to do it. Because really not doing anything is way worse," Ligon said.
She says the whole salon plans to learn CPR and she encourages everyone to get the training as well; because you never know when it could be you saving a life.
"I was not counting on my day being like this, but it just happened. It was unexpected. And to maybe get certified in CPR or watch videos on it just in case something would ever happen and you would know what to do,” Ligon said.
