NEW DETAILS: UNL Police reporting armed man around 14th & W
Posted By: Veronica Ortega
It was a scary few hours for some students on UNL’s campus. They received an alert just after 10 p.m. Monday about an armed male suspect near 14th and W Streets. Students were urged to avoid the area and take protective actions.
UNL Police say a 30-year-old black male wearing a black t-shirt and dreads was seen with a weapon, but officers say they can’t confirm that information at this time. When they arrived on the scene the fight had already broken up.
“Our officers immediately responded and did not witness an altercation upon arrival. Witnesses in the area reported an altercation had occurred between multiple parties on a university basketball court,” says Sgt. Kristy Beitler of the UNL Police Dept.
Nearby at the Lied Center, high school students from around the country were participating in the Thespian Festival. Those students were told to stay inside while officers searched for possible suspects.
Police cleared the area just before midnight and the students at the Lied Center were safely transported to the dorms.
Police say the incident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time.
