Food Stock 2018: Fighting hunger in Lincoln

On Saturday, a few local organizations hosted Food Stock 2018.

It’s an event aiming to restock The Bay and Food Bank of Lincoln with meals for the hungry.

Local organization Spreetail helped host the event, which aims to stock up The Bay and Food Bank of Lincoln with meals to feed the hungry.

"The bay and Lincoln food bank have been great partners of ours. As we’ve tried to continue to figure out how to make more of an impact in the community. And it’s just always worked out well. This is our second one this year, much bigger than last year and we are expecting to keep building on that in the future," said Spreetail CEO Brett Thome.

Instead of an entry fee, the hundreds in attendance were encouraged to make a cash donation upon entering the event.

Food stock had plenty of entertainment to offer as well.

"We’ve got many different great food trucks I think there are seven. A couple different breweries are here as well. The band has been playing all day they sound great. We’ve got bags, we’ve got hacky sacks, some amazing ice cream inside as well, probably the longest line here with the hot weather we’ve had today," said Thome.

Event organizers say this event calls attention to the work being done around Lincoln to fight hunger.

The bay distributed more than 40,000 meals for the food bank in 2017 alone.

They hope this years rendition surpasses the first.

"This event in 2017 raised 30,000 meals for the food bank of Lincoln. We distributed shortly after the food stock event took place. We hope for the same kind of turnout tonight," said Scott Young, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Lincoln.

A portion of the proceeds will also be going toward The Bay’s all access pass program.

A program that works with at risk youth within the Lincoln public schools system.

"The all access pass is one of the bay’s core programs. And it provides students and youth with access to all of our facilities like the digital art space, the skate park, our coffee bar, we offer meals," said The Bay marketing manager Lauren Farris.

Officials say the goal for today’s event was to have over 2,000 people come through and enjoy some food for a good cause.
