Lincoln Fire and Rescue respond to an apartment fire.

It happened just before 5 p.m at an apartment complex near 46th and Prescott.

The landlord happened to be in the building when he smelled smoke coming from the first floor. He was able to put out most of the fire by the time firefighters arrived.

Four tenants of the building were displaced for the night.

The cause of the fire was an overheated cord or power strip. The total damage was estimated at $25,000.

Fire inspectors say two smoke detectors were installed, but they didn’t have working batteries. They say with the daylight saving time ending on Sunday it’s always a good reminder to check your detectors.
