Snow in Lincoln causes awning at Norm’s on 48th to collapse

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Snow caused part of the awning at Norm’s on 48th to collapse early Friday morning.

The awning at the gas station near 48th Street and Normal Boulevard collapsed around 6:30 a.m., owner Dennis Sell said.

Sell said the awning was weakened after a semitrailer hit it about five months ago.

The weight of the snow caused the damaged awning to collapse, partially landing on a pickup truck at a fuel pump.

No one was injured.

A crew from Midwest Petroleum Equipment brought ladders and other equipment to safely cut down the hanging metal sheets.

“It was just blowing in the wind when we got here, so we’re just trying to take it down,” Haden Geiser said.

Around 11 a.m., all that remained was a gaping hole above two gas pumps.

Geiser said heavy snow and strong winds could cause other awnings to collapse.

“On the way here, I’ve seen a couple canopies start to bow,” he said.

There’s not much that can safely be done to avoid roof problems, unless you’re “brave enough to go up with a shovel,” Geiser said.

But in current conditions, that’s nearly impossible.

“Nobody likes being in it,” Geiser said.

Norm’s on 48th remained open throughout the incident.
