LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) —Tensions were high during the Lincoln Public Schools board meeting Tuesday night, the day before in person classes begin.

It didn’t just stay in the board meeting, protesters gathered outside the district office to voice safety concerns.

“The numbers will jump and it will go community wide. It’s concerning that we are opening schools at this moment,” a mother and teacher said.

Worried for not just kids but also teachers and the families they go home to every night, many suggesting LPS should have pushed back the re–opening date. Or, just done 100% remote learning.

“We should be switching it to complete remote learning until we have appropriate guidelines in place,” a protester said.

Holding up signs that said reverse course, don’t fail me LPS and even a casket, protesters were hoping for a last second change from the school district.

Still, superintendent Dr. Steve Joel says staff is ready to welcome thousands of kids through school doors on Wednesday.

“Tomorrow is a good day.. We’ll see, right. The first day of school is always an exciting day,” Dr. Joel said.
