McDonald’s E. coli case count reaches 90 nationwide, 12 in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Federal officials released an update Wednesday on the McDonald’s E. coli outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 15 new cases, bringing the total number of people sickened to 90.
Five more people have been hospitalized nationwide, for a total of 27.
The number of illnesses in Nebraska increased from 11 to 12.
That’s the third-most in the nation, after Colorado and Montana.
Two Nebraskans have sued McDonald’s over the outbreak.
The CDC also confirmed that onions from Taylor Farms — which were used on the Quarter Pounder — are the source of the bacteria.
McDonald’s had already determined that and stopped using the onions.
All the newly reported illnesses began before McDonald’s and Taylor Farms took action, the CDC said, so the agency thinks the ongoing risk to the public is low.

Most people infected with this strain of E. coli have diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting.
Symptoms typically start three to four days after ingesting the bacteria.
The CDC said most people recover without treatment within a week.
