LPD: Woman filed protection order against boyfriend before deadly Lincoln shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Police provided an update Friday on a deadly domestic disturbance in an east Lincoln neighborhood earlier this week.

Police Chief Michon Morrow identified the victim as Michelle Gonzalez, 21, and the shooter as her boyfriend, 28-year-old Ibrahim Alhamadani.

Morrow said Gonzalez filed a protection order against Alhamadani on Wednesday morning, hours before she was shot and killed.

In the protection order application, Gonzalez wrote that Alhamadani physically assaulted her and threatened her with a gun.

“Unfortunately, that protection order was never served,” Morrow said.

Protection orders take multiple steps.

The judge can require the petitioner to come to court and prove that the protection order is needed.

If the filing suggests imminent danger for the victim, a judge can issue an ex parte order, meaning it take effect right away, allowing authorities to step in take and take action immediately.

That’s what happened in Gonzalez’s case.

A judge granted the order, but it didn’t make it in time to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, which is responsible for serving protection orders

“It’s very difficult to say whether we’d been able to serve him, if that would have changed this or not,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner. “I’m hoping that it would have.”

Gonzalez’s death was Nebraska’s third domestic violence homicide in February.

According to Lancaster County Officials, they’ve seen an uptick in protection orders. In 2024, the sheriff’s office received 1,512 protection orders and served 1,495 of them, the most since at least 2007.

Some orders aren’t served because deputies can’t find the subject.

“Protection orders are a high priority for us,” Wagner said. “We try to serve those 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when we get them. It’s just another tool in the toolbox to try and protect them.”

Investigators are working to piece together exactly what led up to the shooting near 84th Street and Sandalwood Drive.

The first call came in around 12:30 p.m., when Gonzalez was hit by a vehicle driven by Alhamadani.

Morrow said two good Samaritans witnessed it, got the woman into their SUV and took off.

Alhamadani chased after the witnesses and crashed into their vehicle, according to police, causing it to spin out in front of a home.

He then got out of the car and fired multiple shots at Gonzalez, the Lincoln Police Department said.

Alhamadani then turned the gun on himself, police said, and was found dead at the scene.

Gonzalez was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
