Woman in critical condition after falling 50 feet at abandoned Lincoln grain elevator
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A woman was seriously injured Tuesday night in a fall at an abandoned grain elevator in Lincoln.
About 10:20 p.m., Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded to the elevator at Sixth and G streets.
When crews arrived, they found the victim, a 19-year-old woman, inside one of the silos.
Battalion Chief Bob Watton said it took LFR about 20 to 25 minutes after it got the call to get the woman out of the elevator.
She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Watton estimated that the woman fell about 50 feet.
In an update Wednesday, police said officers spoke with an 18-year-old boy who said he was hanging out with two other friends.
The friends went inside the grain silos while he stayed outside, according to LPD.
A few minutes later, he heard someone yelling that the victim had fallen and called 911.
Watton said LFR has responded to a lot of calls at the old elevator and is talking to the property owner about adding security measures.
In March 2024, a mattress and other items on the lower level were burned in a fire.
Authorities thought homeless people or squatters were staying there.
