Gov. Pillen allows sweeping Nebraska burn ban to expire

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The burn ban covering most of Nebraska will end at midnight Tuesday.

Gov. Jim Pillen said he will let the ban expire because of the significant rainfall the state has received.

In a statement, he said after consulting with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, he was “comfortable letting the ban lapse.”

Pillen issued a statewide burn ban on April 23, after a prescribed burn in northwest Nebraska got out of control.

The fire ended up burning more than 7,000 acres. The governor’s office said the state’s response cost $600,000.

A week later, Pillen removed the eastern part of the state from the ban.

But he twice extended the ban for the rest of the state, where conditions were drier.

The governor urged Nebraskans to still be careful if they start fires.
