Nebraska accepts $313 million bid for new prison

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has selected the contractor to build the state’s new prison.

The department awarded the project to Hausmann Construction, the lowest bidder, which said it can build the facility for $313.3 million.

“Hausmann Construction is a local company who understands our commitment to fiscal responsibility, completing this project the Nebraska way,” Corrections Director Rob Jeffreys said in a press release. “Their sub-contractors are high-performing and many are local — keeping business in Nebraska.”

The Nebraska Legislature appropriated $350 million for construction of the 1,512-bed facility, which will be built at 70th Street and McKelvie Road northeast of Lincoln.

“NDCS has funding for this entire project, and we will stay within that appropriated funding.”

The new prison will replace the Nebraska State Penitentiary.

The corrections department is finalizing the contract with Hausmann, and construction is expected to begin in early fall.

The state received two other bids for the project.

Clark Construction/MCL Construction bid $341 million, and Sampson Construction/Caddell Construction bid $344.3 million.
