‘Easy way to spread positivity’: Local family starts free flower stand with a catch
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — One local neighbor is turning flowers into a mission of kindness.
In the Woods Park Neighborhood sits a table of fresh flowers with an unusual price tag.
No cash, no credit cards, just one good deed.
Christopher Gorman and his wife started the mission of positivity this year.
With everything going on, they feel it’s important to give back.
“I just put them out on the front door step and said ‘hey make your own bouquet’,” he said. “We had some recycled water bottles that we were able to use for folks to make their own bouquet. We put a little sign up that said $1,000 for a bouquet or say something nice about yourself. We have to get rid of these flowers anyway, and there’s a lot of stuff going on in the world right now so we figured this is a nice, easy way to spread positivity in our community.”
Each week, Gorman posts on Facebook with a mission for neighbors as they come to pick their bouquet.
He said the overwhelming response was unexpected, but all positive.
“Over the last couple weeks, it’s been dozens of shares, hundreds of likes, lots of comments,” he said. “Most of the comments we get are ‘hey i wasn’t expecting this and it really made my day.’ There’s one neighbor that we have never met, that lives right next to us and the first interaction we had was she left a note that said ‘hey i was having a terrible day and these really made my day a lot brighter.'”
He said their goal is to grow enough food to fill the Little Free Pantry in the neighborhood.
And he hopes to build up the positivity for people to have a safe space to go.
“The community garden has been a really nice outlet for me and my wife,” he said. “We work really crazy jobs so having something like this has been really calming and for such a digital world, it’s nice to do things with our hands. Since taking this over, we really hope to have an area for the community, our neighborhood to come in here and pick vegetables and pick flowers.”
