Nearly 30 blocks of mailboxes damaged or destroyed by City of Lincoln snowplow

Mailbox after mailbox after mailbox destroyed.

The snowplow came through early Sunday morning and cleared more than just snow.

The plow left nearly 30 blocks of homes along Normal Boulevard in Lincoln with damaged or destroyed mailboxes.

From 32nd Street all the way to 60th Street along Normal, residents are without mail and without answers.

“I just wish they would have contacted some of the homeowners first rather than me coming to look,” Mike, one of the people who had his mailbox taken out by the snowplow, said.

Mike owns a duplex near Normal Blvd. and Sumner Streets had both his mailboxes destroyed.

He spent several hours Monday afternoon trying to replace them.

Channel 8 Eyewitness News spoke with several other homeowners along Normal who said this isn’t the first time their mailbox has been taken out by a plow, but they’ve never seen this many destroyed at once.

I reached out to the City of Lincoln about the incident and in a statement they told Channel 8:

“The city is still investigating the circumstances of this incident and working with property owners one–on–one to ensure they have the information they need to file claims with the city if they so choose. City policy requires incidents to be documented and reported to Risk Management for investigation.”

Filing a claim with the City does not guarantee they will pay to replace a mailbox and it can take weeks for it to be processed.

Mike spent over $140 replacing his mailboxes and instead of the City paying for a replacement he had another idea, “Maybe they could lower our property taxes a little bit now maybe to make up for this hardship.”
